News Item: August 21, 1959: Hawai`i becomes the fiftieth state of the union.
In 1893 Queen Lili`uokalani served as the last reigning monarch of the Kingdom of Hawai`i before it was overthrown by a group of American and European businessmen and eventually annexed by the United States. Today, the Islands are home to an ethnically diverse population, black and white sandy beaches, the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival (named after the “Merrie Monarch,” King David Kalākaua), and a number of U.S. military bases. Famous Island natives include President Barack Obama, singer Don Ho, golfer Michelle Wie, Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Shane Victorino, and U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki.
