In the News: Asian Pacific Americans

Week of May 18, 2009

News Item: Since 1992, May has been designated as Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month. Initially, President Jimmy Carter had signed a Joint-Resolution in 1978 proclaiming the first ten days of May as Asian Pacific Heritage Week. It eventually became a month-long celebration under George H. W. Bush. This year’s theme is” Lighting the Past, Present and Future,” and honors the “contributions and accomplishments of our nation’s Asian and Pacific Islander citizens, past, present and future.” Visit http://asianpacificheritage.gov for online audio, video, and image collections, and other resources from the Library of Congress, the National Archives, and the National Gallery of Art.

In the News: US–Cuba Relations in 2009

News Item: The Obama administration recently announced that it is revising its policies on family travel to Cuba, remittances to family members, and regulations on gift parcels. According to a White House fact sheet, these changes are being made in order to “help bridge the gap among divided Cuban families and promote the freer flow of information and humanitarian items to the Cuban people.”

Counseling and Psychotherapy Transcripts – May Database of the Month

Counseling and Psychotherapy Transcripts, Client Narratives, and Reference Works is a searchable collection containing real transcripts of therapy and counseling sessions and first-person narratives illuminating the experience of mental illness and its treatment, as well as reference works to contextualize the primary material. New material is added on a biweekly basis and, when complete, the database will contain more than 2,000 session transcripts, 40,000 pages of client narratives, and 25,000 pages of secondary reference material. The database currently includes approximately 53,200 pages of material, including more than 13,000 pages of session transcripts, more than 21,000 pages of client narratives, and more than 18,000 pages of secondary reference material.  Learn more >

Remembering Poetry the Rest of the Year

Digital Collections@FAU Libraries Celebrates Earth Day

The Digital Library celebrates Earth Day by highlighting the Department of History’s Oral History Collection. Noted scholar, author, environmentalist, FAU faculty member, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs 1987-1993, Dr. Leonard Berry reveals a career that emphasized teaching from a global perspective to foster an awareness of environmental issues. The 2002 interview highlights Dr. Berry’s experiences working in Africa and with various international development agencies. Berry’s research has included the following areas: dry soil research, land management, and water scarcity. In 1994, Dr. Berry became the Director of the Florida Center for Environmental Studies.
