We’re a few weeks late in celebrating our 100th In the News post, but better late than never. So…

Here’s to 104. Since October 12, 2007, we’ve covered an array of topics from Blackwater USA (now known as Xe) and media reform, to SCOTUS and Uub. If you’ve missed any of them, stop here. And don’t forget to take a peek at this week’s topic: Punk Rock.

Oh, and by the way, In the News has received some coverage in the blogosphere – The University of Minnesota Press blogged about one of our more recent posts on Immigration Reform.

In the News: British Petroleum (BP) reports that they are in the early stages of containing the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico, but this comes almost four weeks after the Deepwater Horizon oil drilling rig, which was leased by BP, exploded and killed eleven crew members. Government officials have said that over 200,000* gallons of oil were leaking into the Gulf each day, further destroying marine life, the shrimping industry, and tourism in that region.

Good-bye 360 Search, Hello SearchWiSE!

What Happened to 360 Search?

360 Search has been replaced by the new search engine, SearchWiSE. Both are designed to search multiple resources and return results in one interface. Because 360 Search works by searching outside databases and pulling the information in,  it was sometimes slow and a little clunky. SearchWiSE is basically the next generation of searching – all of the information, from books to title level indexing of online journals, is  housed and searched in one place. So now when you conduct a search, you will uncover much of what is unique to FAU Libraries, and your results will be returned quickly in one intuitive interface.

What is SearchWiSE?

SearchWise uses a single search box — that helps you discover information in all formats from the Florida Atlantic University Libraries’ collections — including print and electronic books, journals and newspapers, videos, CDs, and digitized collections.  All of these formats are integrated into a single results list.  You see what you want, click through to the full text if available or, in the case of physical materials, find its location in the library.

To put it simply, SearchWiSE does for libraries what Google does for the Web.  SearchWise is powered by the Summon™ service which works by pre-indexing content, allowing instant and true relevancy-ranked results.

Let us know what you think of SearchWiSE by email, commenting below, or on the Libraries’ Facebook page.

Immigration Reform & Racial Profiling

In the News: Arizona has passed a controversial immigration law that gives police the power to stop individuals they suspect* of being in the U.S. illegally and demand that they provide legal documentation. Opponents of the measure argue that this will result in the racial profiling of all Chicanos, Latinos, Hispanics, and other people of color regardless of citizenship. Supporters believe state lawmakers needed to act on their own because the federal government had been slow in its response to immigration reform.

*According to Arizona Senate Bill 1070: “…where reasonable suspicion exists that the person is an alien who is unlawfully present in the United States,…”
