Florida Atlantic University Libraries’ announces the launch of the University’s first open access journal published with the Open Journal System. The Florida Geographer, the official publication of the Florida Society of Geographers is now available online at http://journals.fcla.edu/flgeog. Hispanic Latino Heritage Month

In the News: FAU celebrates Hispanic Latino Heritage Month! (September 15-October 15, 2010)
These titles are on display in the lobby of the S.E. Wimberly Library on the Boca Raton Campus. The books are suggestions from the Hispanic Latino Heritage Month Committee members and FAU librarians, but this list by no means includes all of the materials we have on the subject. One Search Box. . . Discover FAU Libraries

SearchWise Owl

Florida Atlantic University Libraries are introducing SearchWiSE, a search engine that does for the FAU Libraries’ collections what Google does for the Internet.

SearchWiSE uses a single search box to help you discover information in all formats, including print and electronic books, journals and newspapers, videos, CDs and digital collections. All of these formats are integrated into a single results list. Find what you want online, or in the case of physical materials, find where they are located in the FAU Libraries.

The SearchWiSE interface includes facets that allow library users to refine their results. For example, users can target only peer-reviewed items, show only full text articles or include/exclude items such as newspaper articles, books or journals.

Discovering what the FAU Libraries offer has been greatly simplified and amplified because of SearchWiSE.  Read more>>

Try SearchWiSE now from the libraries home page or go to www.fau.edu/library/ecollect/searchwise.php.

Generals & the Social Forum

In the News: General Stanley McChrystal was relieved of his duties as the commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan. Taking his place is General David Petraeus, Commander of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and architect of the 2007 counterinsurgency operations in Iraq. This week we look at other U.S. generals from the 20th and 21st centuries.

Also In the News: The second U.S. Social Forum, an offshoot of the World Social Forum, was held in Detroit last week, but the event received very little news coverage by the mainstream media.

Good-bye 360 Search, Hello SearchWiSE!

What Happened to 360 Search?

360 Search has been replaced by the new search engine, SearchWiSE. Both are designed to search multiple resources and return results in one interface. Because 360 Search works by searching outside databases and pulling the information in,  it was sometimes slow and a little clunky. SearchWiSE is basically the next generation of searching – all of the information, from books to title level indexing of online journals, is  housed and searched in one place. So now when you conduct a search, you will uncover much of what is unique to FAU Libraries, and your results will be returned quickly in one intuitive interface.

What is SearchWiSE?

SearchWise uses a single search box — that helps you discover information in all formats from the Florida Atlantic University Libraries’ collections — including print and electronic books, journals and newspapers, videos, CDs, and digitized collections.  All of these formats are integrated into a single results list.  You see what you want, click through to the full text if available or, in the case of physical materials, find its location in the library.

To put it simply, SearchWiSE does for libraries what Google does for the Web.  SearchWise is powered by the Summon™ service which works by pre-indexing content, allowing instant and true relevancy-ranked results.

Let us know what you think of SearchWiSE by email, commenting below, or on the Libraries’ Facebook page.

ARTstor has Improved Functionality

ARTstor
, a collection of hundreds and thousands of digital images, has improved the functionality of and corrected errors related to several features in the Digital Library.

• URL links to images and groups will open the image viewer consistently, whether a user clicks the link on a web page, in an email or document, or pastes the URL into a browser address bar.

• URL links to image groups will allow ARTstor users (on-campus or accessing through a user account) to open the group, regardless of the access rights on the image group’s folder.

• Changes made to the order of image groups within folders can now be saved successfully, and changes will persist in future sessions.

Folders created and edited through the Folder Manager window can be assigned ‘Public’ access, and saved successfully without receiving an error message.

• Folders assigned ‘Private’ access with no password will no longer display as ‘Public’ in the Folder Manager window.

If you have further questions about using these features, please consult the ARTstor Help pages (http://help.artstor.org) or contact User Services at 888-278-0079 / userservices@artstor.org.
