In the News: The Beatles, Muhammad Ali, and the Ford Mustang

It happened 50 years ago in 1964: The Beatles made their first live U.S. TV appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in February…Later that month, Cassius Clay (who eventually changed his name to Muhammad Ali) defeated Sonny Liston in Miami to become the world heavyweight boxing champion…In March, Ford Motor Company introduced the Mustang.

Statistical Abstract of the United States

Published annually by the Federal Government since 1878, Statistical Abstract of the United States is a comprehensive summary of statistics on the social, political, and economic organizations of the United States. The 2014 edition is now available.

In the spring of 2011, the Census Bureau announced that the edition that year would be the last one produced at government expense. Despite protests from librarians and journalists and despite petitions to Congress, the Census Bureau unit that published the Statistical Abstract was eliminated in November. Its elimination resulted not from a decline in popularity or perceived value, but from the need to reduce agency spending while supporting new and existing data collection efforts. ProQuest has now taken on responsibility for updating and releasing this publication, the most used statistical reference tool in U.S. libraries.

Florida Atlantic University Libraries is proud to support Open Access by becoming a SCOAP³ (Sponsoring Consortium for Open Access Publishing in Particle Physics) partner. On January 1, 2014, CERN announced the start of the SCOAP³ Open Access publishing initiative. Mango Languages

Mango Languages is an online self-paced language learning system covering over 40 languages and including 16 ESL classes taught in the native language, and four Religious and Scholarly language courses. Each lesson combines real life situations and audio from native speakers with simple, clear instructions.  Each Mango lesson is focused on practical, common conversation skills and includes instruction on vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, AND culture.

Congressional Research Service (CRS) Reports

The FAU Libraries have added the ProQuest Congressional Research Service (CRS) Reports archive to the ProQuest Congressional database. The CRS Reports, 1916-2013, include the full text of reports from the Congressional Research Service (CRS) which was established within the Library of Congress to provide members, committees, and congressional staff with nonpartisan and objective research and analysis on all public policy issues. Read more about the CRS.

ProQuest Congressional provides the tools for searching the Congressional Record, finding members of Congress, tracking proposed legislation by keyword and sponsor, searching Congressional hearings, the Federal Register, the U.S. Serial Set Digital Collection, Congressional committee schedules, Committee Prints & Misc. Publications and Congressional Research Service (CRS) Reports.

LGBT Studies in Video

November 2013 Database of the Month

LGBT Studies in Video is a cinematic survey of the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people as well as the cultural and political evolution of the LGBT community. This first-of-its-kind collection features award-winning documentaries, interviews, archival footage, and select feature films exploring LGBT history, gay culture and subcultures, civil rights, marriage equality, LGBT families, AIDS, transgender issues, religious perspectives on homosexuality, global comparative experiences, and other topics. One of the primary partners for this collection is Frameline, a nonprofit media organization that produces the San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival, the oldest film festival devoted to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender programming currently in existence.
