Immigration Reform & Racial Profiling

In the News: Arizona has passed a controversial immigration law that gives police the power to stop individuals they suspect* of being in the U.S. illegally and demand that they provide legal documentation. Opponents of the measure argue that this will result in the racial profiling of all Chicanos, Latinos, Hispanics, and other people of color regardless of citizenship. Supporters believe state lawmakers needed to act on their own because the federal government had been slow in its response to immigration reform.

*According to Arizona Senate Bill 1070: “…where reasonable suspicion exists that the person is an alien who is unlawfully present in the United States,…”
