In the News: Hugo Chávez (1954-2013)
Venezuelan president, Hugo Rafael Chávez Frías, has died. (From Encyclopædia Britannica: “Chávez styled himself as the leader of the “Bolivarian Revolution,” a socialist political program for much of Latin America, named after Simón Bolívar, the South American independence hero. Although the focus of the revolution has been subject to change depending on Chavez’s goals, its key elements include nationalism, a centralized economy, and a strong military actively engaged in public projects. His ideology became known to many as simply chavismo.”)

A look at Chavez’s weekly televised show “Aló Presidente” reveals how the president’s clever use of the media has endeared him to the population of Venezuela. The program also looks back to the failed 1992 coup that first put him in the media spotlight, though it also earned him a two-year prison sentence. Released in 1994, Chavez immediately began laying the groundwork for his eventual rise to the presidency four years later. After 10 years in power and the expenditure of billions of dollars, the social ills Hugo Chavez promised to fix don’t seem to be showing any major signs of improvement
