Jewish Life in America is a database of original source materials exploring the history of Jewish communities in America,  from the arrival of the first Jews in the 17th century through to the mid-20th century. This rich collection brings to life the communal and social aspects of Jewish identity and culture, whilst tracing Jewish involvement in the political life of American society as a whole. The material is based on a variety of original manuscript collections from the American Jewish Historical Society in New York, digitized and organized into six major collections and twenty-four collections of personal papers. In addition, Jewish Life in America contains a wealth of materials designed as supplementary resources; these include a chronology, interactive maps, essays by leading scholars, a selection of American Jewish Year Book articles, a visual resources gallery, biographies and links to other useful websites. Filmakers Library Online – November Database of the Month

For more than 40 years, Filmakers Library has delivered high-quality, issue-based documentaries and independent films from around the world. You can now access more than 1,000 of these titles at Filmakers Library Online, a multidisciplinary collection of streaming video designed specifically for researchers. Internationally known producers such as the National Film Board of Canada and KCTS/Seattle are represented. Also included are the works of hundreds of notable independent film makers worldwide, including Christine Choy, Roger Weisberg, Josh Aronson, David Bradbury, Judith Gleason, Jeremy Levine & Landon Van Soest, Aaron Matthews, Jeffrey O’Connor, Tana Ross, and Taggart Siegel.

Filmakers Library Online includes documentaries that are already heavily used in humanities and social science classrooms—films such as Who Killed Vincent Chin?; Aging Out: Teens Leaving Foster Care; Critical Condition; Dax’s Case: Who Should Decide?; Sound and Fury: The Communication Wars of the Deaf; and Waging a Living.

GEOBASE – October Database of the Month

GEOBASE is a multidisciplinary database of indexed research literature on the earth sciences, including geology, human and physical geography, environmental sciences, oceanography, geomechanics, alternative energy sources, pollution, waste management and nature conservation.  The  2.2 million earth sciences abstracts provide  information needed for comprehensive evaluation of a region, including geographical structure and relation to natural resources. Ethnographic Video Online provides a comprehensive resource for the study of human culture and behavior, and will contain 1,000 streaming videos at completion (this release includes 687 videos).  The collection includes footage from every continent and hundreds of unique cultures, and is particularly rich in its coverage of the developing world.  The work of many of the most influential documentary filmmakers of the 20th century is featured, as are hundreds of the most frequently assigned films in anthropology and other social science courses (browse titles). The Times Digital Archive, 1785-1985 – May Database of the Month

The Times Digital Archive is an online, full-text facsimile of 200 years of The Times (London), one of the most highly regarded resources for the 19th – 20th-century history. The entire newspaper from 1785 to 1985 is captured, with all articles, advertisements and illustrations/photos divided into categories to facilitate searching.  This archive is a good resource for teachers, students and researchers of  Irish history, politics, social and cultural history, law, genealogy and criminology. Florida Electronic Library – April Database of the Month

The Florida Electronic Library (FEL) is Florida’s virtual library, providing access to research resources to all Florida citizens. FEL offers information for all age groups, including homework help for students and resources for teachers. Available resources include magazines, newspapers, almanacs, encyclopedias, and books, providing information on topics such as current events, education, business, technology, and health issues. Public users coming from a Florida location will  automatically be recognized without having to go through a log-in routine. All of the FEL resources are also listed on Libraries’ Indexes and Databases pages.

The Florida Electronic Library Plan is the result of a strategic planning process conducted with a planning team of representatives of Florida libraries and guided by the Florida Library Network Council and the Division of Library and Information Services. This program is funded under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, administered by Florida Department of State, Division of Library and Information Services.

Classical Scores Library – March Database of the Month

Classical Scores Library contains hundreds of thousands of pages of the most important classical music scores, manuscripts, and previously unpublished material, allowing for the study and analysis of more than 24,000 musical scores.

Classical Scores Library allows users to access multiple types of scores across various composers, genres, and time periods. Within seconds, beginning music students can explore Beethoven’s entire compositional output, or music experts can compare different musical settings of the Magnificat from the 15th century to the 21st century-without the need to find and carry heavy scores and multiple CDs. eHRAF World Cultures – February Database of the Month

Whether you are interested in learning about the North American Hmong’s beliefs in the causes and cures of diseases or the Pashtun’s religious views, eHRAF World Cultures provides you with in-depth information on all aspects of cultural and social life.

This database is a systematically organized collection of thousands of books and articles on cultures from all regions of the world. eHRAF World Cultures may be used to find information on particular cultures, ethnic groups, or immigrant groups,  or to find information on beliefs, superstitions, or subjects such as political structure, architecture, kinship units, or settlement patterns.

eHRAF Search uses HRAF’s Outline of World Cultures (OWC) culture and HRAF’s Outline of Cultural Materials (OCM) subject indexing to enhance the power of your search. Every paragraph in the 2000 plus eHRAF documents is indexed by OWC culture and OCM subject categories according to the relevancy of the paragraph discussion regardless of the specific paragraph text.

Web of Science – January Database of the Month

Explore the world’s leading citation database with multidisciplinary coverage of over 10,000 high-impact journals in the sciences, social sciences, and arts and humanities. FAU’s edition of Web of Science consists of the following  three citation databases containing references cited by the authors of the articles.

You can conduct traditional searches across the databases  or  do cited reference searching. This type of search allows you to find articles that cite a previously published work.  Other tools include Citation Maps, a graphic representation of citation relationships, and the Analyze Tool.
