Protests in Egypt

In the News: Cairo – Since mass protests began in Egypt on January 25, President Hosni Mubarak has announced that he would not seek re-election for a sixth term. It has been reported that protests were organized by opposition groups using various forms of social media. Among the leading critics of the Mubarak government are the Muslim Brotherhood and Nobel Laureate Mohammed ElBaradei.

Jafar Panahi and Iranian Cinema

In the News: Jafar Panahi, a renowned Iranian filmmaker, was recently sentenced to six years in prison on charges that have never been made clear although it is believed that Panahi’s support of the antigovernment movement was a factor. Panahi is also banned from writing scripts and directing films for the next twenty years.

Shootings in Tucson, Arizona

In the News: A gunman opened fire at a “Congress on Your Corner” meeting held in Tucson, Arizona on January 8. Six people were killed and 14 others were wounded. Among those who were shot include Gabrielle Giffords, a United States Congresswoman from Arizona’s Eight District. In the aftermath of the shootings, some of the issues raised include gun control, freedom of speech, mass shootings, and mental health services.

Wiki Leaks and the Pentagon Papers

In the News: The recent release of confidential diplomatic cables and documents by the whistleblower WikiLeaks is slightly reminiscent of what took place almost forty years ago when Daniel Ellsberg, former American defense policy analyst, leaked the Pentagon Papers to The New York Times in 1971. Ellsberg will appear at Florida Atlantic University in February 2011 as part of the Alan B. Larkin Symposium on the American Presidency.

In the News: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1, was the box office winner over the Thanksgiving holiday. The film, based on the seventh novel by J. K. Rowling, has been broken into two parts. Fans are counting down the days until the final Harry Potter movie (Part 2) is released in July 2011.

Also In the News: Holiday air travel has only just begun…and with it come new airport security regulations. Many travelers have questioned the efficacy of the enhanced scanners and believe they are invasive, violate basic privacy rights, and could present unknown radiation risks. Others argue that the scanners are necessary to keep everyone safe from would-be terrorists.

A family memoir by Condoleezza Rice, PhD, former Secretary of State and National Security Advisor under the Bush Administration, was published in October. (The Boca Raton Campus of the FAU Libraries has ordered copies of both titles for its collection.)
