In the News: 21st Century New Deal?

News Item: President-elect Barack Obama has presented his American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan which, he has said, would resuscitate the economy. This stimulus package could cost around $775 billion and would be used, in part, for tax cuts and to create 3.5 million new jobs. Could this be the makings of a modern-day New Deal? Listed here are some titles that provide some background information on President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal program of the 1930s.

Classical Music Library Has a New Look

In addition to a new interface, the latest release of Classical Music Library includes new features and updates.

  • Album Browse: Browse all classical works by album and find associated recordings.
  • Updated Playlists: Individual items in a playlist can be annotated, and links to any item (whether available in Classical Music Library or on the Web) can easily be added.
  • Content Sharing: Create, name, and annotate a personal playlist. Then choose to share it with other users at your institution, or with anyone who subscribes to Classical Music Library.
  • Advanced Search: The improved Advanced Search allows you to limit results to recordings where the complete work is available. Continue reading

America’s Historical Newspapers – January Database of the Month

 

America’s Historical Newspapers allows users to search more than 1,000 U.S. historical newspapers published between 1690 and 1922, including titles from all 50 states. Created by Readex through partnerships with the American Antiquarian Society, Library of Congress, Wisconsin Historical Society and others, America’s Historical Newspapers enables researchers to explore virtually every aspect of America during the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. The Wilbur H. Siebert Underground Railroad Collection

The FAU Libraries have received another generous gift from Mr. Hugh W. Ripley.

Finding that students in his American history classes “were inclined to be restless and inattentive, [Wilbur H. Siebert] decided to arouse their interest over a mysterious and romantic subject that was rich in adventure.”

The Wilbur H. Siebert Collection contains correspondence, notes, manuscripts, student papers, maps, and photographs related to the Underground Railroad. Research material includes the responses generated by his seven-question survey and copies and notes from a wide variety of sources: books; diaries; letters; photographs; newspaper articles; biographies and memoirs; state, county, and local histories; annual reports; trial records; U.S. and Canadian census reports; legislation; and Congressional speeches. Siebert also conducted interviews with Underground Railroad agents and former fugitive slaves. He organized his research by state and county, eventually binding his notes in volumes according to the location of the Underground Railroad station or activity. New Database – SourceOECD

Access and search international economic statistics, books, and journals published by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

SourceOECD inludes:

  •  20 thematic full-text book collections
  •  24 full-text periodicals
  • Source OECD Statistics  with access to 24 interactive databases. This feature now includes an updated Index of Statistical Variables that links to Excel tables, and links to tables of data found in the OECD Factbook, OECD in Figures, OECD Economic Outlook and other publications.
  • Access to OECD’s Working Paper series, over 800 papers, beginning with issue one.

Over 40 years ago Studs Terkel began a conversation with the American people, asking them to expose their everyday lives. He tenderly and truthfully told our story (the
American and the human) throughout his career as broadcaster and writer. His two well known books, Working (1974) and Race: How blacks and whites think and feel about the American obsession (1992), are good examples of his oral history style. Continue reading

Oxford Art Online – November Database of the Month

Oxford Art Online is the new home of Grove Art Online and also provides access to three other well-respected resources for art reference; The Encyclopedia of Aesthetics, The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Art Terms, and The Oxford Companion to Western Art.

Oxford Art Online is an extensive, authoritative and easily searchable online art resource.  The resources can be searched as a group or the user can select one or more individual titles to search.  Included are  more than 23,000 subject entries, 21,000 biographies, 500,000 bibliographic citations, 40,000 image links and 5,000 images.  Precise search and browse capabilities allow users to refine their results by source and subject categories.  Print and Email functions are available, as well as a  “How to Cite” feature for both articles and images.  Citations can be exported to citation management software such as RefWorks and Endnote.

Video Clips Now in Newsbank

Newsbank has added video news content to their online resources. In addition to the 600 US and 500 international full-text newspapers already in  Access World News, search results now include video from The Associated Press, Reuters, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, local affiliates of ABC, NBC, CBS, and Fox, as well as coverage from Canadian Broadcasting, Agence France-Presse, and more.

  • Play news videos within the NewsBank interface, in the same space used to display text articles
  • Select specific videos from a comprehensive results lists that also includes NewsBank articles, or restrict their search to “video only”
  • Access recent and archived news videos at your institution or remotely
