In the News: Summer doesn’t officially begin until June, but the temperatures are starting to rise here in the 22nd largest (in total area) and the 4th most populous state of the Union. The L.A. Riots

In the News: On April 29, 1992, the South Central L.A. area erupted in civil unrest immediately following the acquittal of four L.A.P.D. officers who had been accused of beating a black man, Rodney King. The National Guard was deployed to the area to enforce curfews and suppress the disorder. Many Korean-owned shops in Koreatown were looted which prompted the community to come together and defend their businesses from rioters.

In the News: For a second year in a row, “In the News” is celebrating Mother’s Day early. The focus this time around is on “working” mothers. Political analyst and Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen recently commented that Ann Romney, wife of Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney, had “never worked a day in her life” and because the Romneys were financially secure,  they did not have to “deal with the kinds of economic issues that a majority of the women in this country are facing” today. Mrs. Romney defended her choice to stay at home and raise her five sons, which, she said, was hard work.
