{"id":4297,"date":"2011-06-17T17:21:52","date_gmt":"2011-06-17T21:21:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/libweb.fau.edu\/blog\/?p=4297"},"modified":"2015-10-07T14:46:25","modified_gmt":"2015-10-07T18:46:25","slug":"rare-american-civil-war-etchings-fau-digital-library","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/libweb.fau.edu\/blog\/rare-american-civil-war-etchings-fau-digital-library\/","title":{"rendered":"Rare American Civil War Etchings @ FAU Digital Library"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.library.fau.edu\/depts\/digital_library\/collections.htm\" target=\"_blank\">FAU Digital Library<\/a> presents the <a href=\"http:\/\/purl.fcla.edu\/fau\/acw\" target=\"_blank\">American Civil War Collection<\/a>\u00a0in tribute to the 150th anniversary of the war between the States.<\/p>\n<p>Originally characterized as \u201cscarce and very interesting,\u201d\u00a0FAU Libraries&#8217; featured <a href=\"http:\/\/purl.fcla.edu\/fau\/CivilWarSketches\" target=\"_blank\">Conferederate War etchings<\/a> in the <a href=\"http:\/\/purl.fcla.edu\/fau\/CivilCross\" target=\"_blank\">Elliot Cross and James A. Cross Civil War Collection<\/a>\u00a0are satirical sketches\u00a0sympathetic to the Confederacy. The etchings were produced by German born artist Adalbert John Volck (1828\u20131912), a lifelong Balitmore resident,\u00a0under the\u00a0pseudonym V. Blada, an anagram for Adalbert.\u00a0Volck&#8217;s\u00a0etchings were published\u00a0in <em>Sketches from the Civil War in North America, 1861, \u201962, \u201963.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/libweb.fau.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/I3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4314\" title=\"I3\" src=\"http:\/\/libweb.fau.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/I3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"163\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThe Cross Collection is named for the late Elliot Cross and son James Cross. James Cross\u00a0 donated to the FAU Libraries his father\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/fauarchon.fcla.edu\/?p=collections\/findingaid&amp;id=62&amp;q=\" target=\"_blank\">collection<\/a> of purchased papers, lithographs and prints, currency, letters and memorabilia.<\/p>\n<p>The etchings depict caricatures and cartoons that summarize the mood of one of America\u2019s bloodiest conflicts. Daily witness to the American Civil War is accounted in rare, original\u00a0materials\u00a0held at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.library.fau.edu\/depts\/spc\/special.htm\" target=\"_blank\">FAU Libraries&#8217; Special Collections &amp; Archives<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FAU Digital Library presents the American Civil War Collection\u00a0in tribute to the 150th anniversary of the war between the States.
