Breastfeeding \/\u00a0 Sweatshops<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the News: <\/em>World Breastfeeding<\/a> Week runs through August 7, 2010. The World Health Organization states that breastfeeding is the \u201cbest way to provide newborns with the nutrients they need\u201d and recommends \u201cexclusive breastfeeding until a baby is six months old, and continued breastfeeding with the addition of nutritious complementary foods for up to two years or beyond.\u201d Breast is best.<\/p>\n

Also In the News<\/em>: Nike, the sports apparel giant, will pay over $1.5 million to assist 1,800 Honduran subcontracted workers who were laid off in 2009. United Students Against Sweatshops<\/a>, the grassroots student-run group that formed in 1997, pressured Nike to provide $2.5 million in severance pay to the workers, but the company opted to create a relief fund instead. The University of Wisconsin terminated its licensing agreement with Nike due to the school\u2019s concerns about how the Honduran workers were treated. Cornell University threatened to drop Nike prior to the company\u2019s announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
