Comprising the core of the Marvin & Sybil Weiner “Spirit of America” Collection<\/a> is an extensive selection of primary materials dealing with the American Revolution. The items in the collection provide insight into the contemporary debates over the proper role of government and the powers of Parliament. Many of the materials pertain to the Stamp Act, which is often seen as the catalyst of the American movement towards independence. \u00a0Other topics of study might include the interpretation of the British mercantile system and the importance of trade between England and her colonies or an investigation into the publications of the day, which include published speeches and sermons.<\/p>\n

British and American viewpoints are represented via published works by such luminaries as Edmund Burke, Thomas Paine and Junius.\u00a0 In addition, the collection contains the writings of lesser-known authors like Josiah Tucker and John Horne Tooke.<\/p>\n

In keeping with the donor’s ideal of hands-on research, scholars who utilize this collection will benefit from the unique opportunity to handle rare and original works. Students, faculty and other researchers are encouraged to make an appointment so that items can be paged in advance of their visit. Tours, workshops and staff assistance are also available.
