Today, the Islands are home to an ethnically diverse population, black and white sandy beaches, the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival (named after the &#8220;Merrie Monarch,&#8221; King David Kal\u0101kaua), and a number of U.S. military bases. Famous Island natives include President Barack Obama, singer Don Ho, golfer Michelle Wie, Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Shane Victorino, and U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki.
