One Search Box. . . Discover FAU Libraries

SearchWise Owl

Florida Atlantic University Libraries are introducing SearchWiSE, a search engine that does for the FAU Libraries’ collections what Google does for the Internet.

SearchWiSE uses a single search box to help you discover information in all formats, including print and electronic books, journals and newspapers, videos, CDs and digital collections. All of these formats are integrated into a single results list. Find what you want online, or in the case of physical materials, find where they are located in the FAU Libraries.

The SearchWiSE interface includes facets that allow library users to refine their results. For example, users can target only peer-reviewed items, show only full text articles or include/exclude items such as newspaper articles, books or journals.

Discovering what the FAU Libraries offer has been greatly simplified and amplified because of SearchWiSE.  Read more>>

Try SearchWiSE now from the libraries home page or go to www.fau.edu/library/ecollect/searchwise.php.

“Less Work, More Life”

In the News: As Labor Day (U.S.) approaches next week, we focus on how work affects our lives. The cover story in the September 2010 issue of The Progressive highlights the need for Americans to work less. The author, John de Graaf, argues that “reducing hours and sharing available work is essential for our families, health, economic security, and the environment.”

Breastfeeding /  Sweatshops

In the News: World Breastfeeding Week runs through August 7, 2010. The World Health Organization states that breastfeeding is the “best way to provide newborns with the nutrients they need” and recommends “exclusive breastfeeding until a baby is six months old, and continued breastfeeding with the addition of nutritious complementary foods for up to two years or beyond.” Breast is best.

Also In the News: Nike, the sports apparel giant, will pay over $1.5 million to assist 1,800 Honduran subcontracted workers who were laid off in 2009. United Students Against Sweatshops, the grassroots student-run group that formed in 1997, pressured Nike to provide $2.5 million in severance pay to the workers, but the company opted to create a relief fund instead. The University of Wisconsin terminated its licensing agreement with Nike due to the school’s concerns about how the Honduran workers were treated. Cornell University threatened to drop Nike prior to the company’s announcement.
