Introduction
Please follow this style guide when creating pages in this wiki. The following will cover
1.) The order of resources
2.) Quantity of each section
3.) How each section of the wiki should look
4.) Helpful suggestions to make creating and editing as simple as possible
1.) Order of Resources
Please title each section as it is listed below.
- Electronic Databases
- Journals
- How to Find Resources in the Library
- Resources by Library
- Selected Web Sites
- About this Guide
2.) Quantity of each section
Note that the following list of how many resources should be found in each section is just a guide. If the following recommendation does not make sense for your guide (as some of them are very specialized) then please see the administrator on your campus.
In general no resource should be more than 5 years old, unless it is a part of a series that started prior to 5 years ago or it’s a staple resource for your field.
Electronic Databases: 3-5
When choosing a database, make sure it relates specifically to your field. No subject guide should contain such databases as Academic Search Premier or Omnifile Fulltext. Those are for general searches not subject specific searches. Each section will link to the general list of database by subject.
Journals: 5-10
Each section will link to the general list of journals by subject.
How to Find Resources in the Library: 1-3 for subject sections, 3-5 for subject terms
Resources by Library: 10-15 of all types of resources per library
This guide will only list the most important resources to get the students started in their research, after that they can search the browse-able sections you listed in the “how to find resources in the library” section which pertain to their specific task.
Selected Web Sites: 0-5 with an abstract
Not every guide will need web sites listed, but if you do list them, make sure you have an abstract to describe what it is and how to use it (i.e. explain why the website is ok to use in a scholarly manner since many professors do not want their students using websites).
3.) The Look of Each Section
Each section has a slightly different look to help distinguish each section. Please follow the guide. Below each style you will see what the coding looks like. In some cases, a description of the coding is offered in italics. If the description is not enough look at an active guide to see an example.
Electronic Databases
The titles of the databases are bolded and in alphabetical order. An abstract should be copied from the electronic resources page for each database.
EXAMPLE

Provides access to current and past (1991-2002) United Nations documents and publications.
Features information from the 107th Congress, election results, congressional committees, and more. Published by the National Journal Group Inc.
Special Circumstances
- Some databases have archives or specific dates that are covered in another database.
- For 2 Databases, i.e., Art Index Full Text and Art Index Retrospective, link each one separately, on the same line, above the combined description of the database, show as below.
- For 3 Databases, i.e., Compendex (3 sections with different dates), show as below.
- Do not use a period at the end of the Database Name
- Capitalize all words in title of a database (except "stop words")
- In sentence where you are to link user to the subject database, link to the specific subject database if there is only one. If the subject can be related to more than one database, link to the "databases by subject" main menu
Art Index with Full Text. Art Index Retrospective
Subjects include Advertising Art, Antiques, Archaeology, Architecture and Architectural History, Art History, Crafts, Decorative Arts, Folk Art, Graphic Arts, Industrial Design, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, Motion Pictures, Museology, Non-Western Art, Painting, Photography, Pottery, Sculpture, Television, and Textiles. Full-text coverage for Art Index with Full Text begins in 1997.
Compendex
Compendex can be accessed in three different ways.
Compendex® is the most comprehensive interdisciplinary engineering database in the world. Compendex contains over 8 million records and references over 5,000 international engineering sources including journal, conference, and trade publications. Coverage is from 1969 to present and the database is updated weekly. Combined with the Engineering Index Backfile, the database includes over 9.7 million records and spans back to 1884.
Covers significant engineering and technical literature from journals, technical reports, engineering society publications, books, and conference proceedings and papers.
Journals
Both Electronic Journals and Print Journals will be listed here, alphabetically.
If there are resources, follow the following style:

Communication Booknotes Quarterly. Electronic Holdings: .
Special Circumstances
- Links to electronic journals should not be to individual journals provided by individual vendors. Instead, please use the Syntax noted below for creating a durable SFX menu URL. The ISSN at the end of the link is the only part that changes.
- http://sfx.fcla.edu/fau?sid=sfx:e_collection&issn= plus the ISSN should be used for each journal.
- example: http://sfx.fcla.edu/fau?sid=sfx:e_collection&issn=1363-9080 should be used for Journal of education and work
Some hints:
- The easiest way to find the ISSN for a journal is by using the Electronic Journal Search from FAU Libraries homepage. This ISSN should be used as part of the durable SFX menu URL, and will show "related" holdings, such as holdings under a prior name for that journal, holdings via aggregators, holdings via subscription, etc.
- Check each link carefully to make sure that it links to the correct title and at least spot check to see if the first few entries resolve correctly. If there is any problem, please report to Eleanor and Jane.
- If no electronic holdings appear, report to Eleanor and Jane.
- Note that journals have a print and electronic ISSN. SFX normally uses the print ISSN, but if it’s not working try the EISSN.
- There may be an instance where it would make sense to link directly to the journal. A good example would be Nature or Science. Both of these journals are also databases and the sites are more comprehensive than that of an aggregator. There may be other reasons to link directly to the journal. See below for sample.
- There may be some instances in which SFX will not have the journal in their knowledge base, or it may be delayed in appearing in SFX. It would probably be a good idea to use a direct URL in the meantime.
- When looking at the SFX holdings, be sure to include the dates of holdings for "Full Text for Related Object," as these are the holdings for the same journal which was previously known by another name. Doing this will show the holdings for all titles under which the same journal has been published. List all titles for this publication, and list all dates for which all of these titles are available for each type of format (electronic holdings, print, microfilm, microfiche).
Performing Arts Journal and PAJ: A Journal of Performance and Art. Electronic Holdings: 1976-current. Print Holdings: 1988-1997, 1998-2004.
- Call Number: PN1561 .P47
Location: Boca Raton
- Print Journals – Even if there are missing journal issues within a run of journals we have in print, show the entire year. If there are questions about how to show this, use your best judgment and it will be reviewed in proofing.
- Do use a period after the Journal Title, outside the closing ]
- Capitalize all words in Journal Title (except "stop words")
- Make certain to show the location of the print journals (Boca, Jupiter, Treasure Coast). If journals are located at more than one campus, show the combined dates of holdings in the area for "Print Holdings" and under "Location", show the locations and dates of holdings at each location. See below for sample.
- In sentence where you are to link user to the journal subject list, link to the specific journal subject list if there is only one. If the wiki subject area can be related to more than one journal subject list, instead link to the main journal subject list menu.

Location: Boca Raton (1922-1958, 1960-1963, 1965, 1967-2007) & Jupiter (latest 5 years).
NOTE: When listing the holdings for journals, please make certain you take the holding dates from the SFX list, not from the Electronic Journals list. When listing the dates of holdings, the following verbiage is being employed for different situations:
1914-1 year ago (when there is a one year hold on the library receiving the current issue)
1916-6 months ago (when there is a six month hold on the library receiving the current issue)
1979-Current (note the use of the hyphen, and capitalize “C” in “Current”)

Resources by Library
All the resources, whether it’s a book, electronic book, microform, or video, will be listed together, alphabetically. In order for the student to have easier access to the physical material, this section will be divided by library: Boca Raton, MacArthur, Port St. Lucie. Follow the structure I have listed for Boca Raton campus for the other campuses. I have given an example of each type of resource below. The citation should always be in the order of: Title. Author last name, Author initials. Date. If any of the citation information is missing from the record, just do not list it. If the citation is for a series of volumes, that can be added at the end of the citation.

About this Guide
If more than one librarian has worked on this guide, place the current librarian’s name first with the link to their email address and put the other librarians after wards. Remember to replace the XXXX with the appropriate information
EXAMPLE
This guide was designed by Librarian XX to help identify resources on XXXX and related topics in the FAU Boca Raton Library. The electronic resources are available from the FAU Libraries home page by following the links entitled Indexes/ Databases or Articles. Some of these resources have full-text articles available online. To access these resources from off campus, use the Off Campus Connecting (EZproxy) link and log in using your 14-digit Owl Card number and the last four digits of your SSN. For further assistance, please contact the Reference Desk by telephone (561-297-3785) or send e-mail to lyref@fau.edu.

Show current editor (linked to email), then show original contributor
Helpful Suggestions
- When Editing: The best way to edit is by the tab at the top of the web page. If you hit the edit link next to the section, any spacing between the sections is set to the default, only one line break. This wiki was designed to have three line breaks between each section to avoid clutter.
- Location for Journals: Make sure you specify in which library the journals is listed.
- Format: List the full name of the format, starting with a capital (i.e. Book, Video, Microfilm, Government Document)
- No content in certain sections: If your guide does not have content in one of the sections, the header still needs to be there there (i.e. if you do not list any websites). Instead of content please leave the message "There are no resources listed at this time."
- Spacing: Be conscious of spacing between sentences. If you do not have either 1.) at least one line break between sentences/sections or 2.) an asterisk in front of a sentence/section, then the wiki will assume it's all one big paragraph. Also, Use only one space between other characters or after periods.
- Style tips: You can either type in all the style codes or you can highlight the text and just click the icon at the top of the editing page for the style that is required (bold, italic)
- Underline: In order to underline, use the html code
- Copying URLs: Make sure you copy the correct URL from the databases, electronic journals, and electronic books. To do this, go to the FAU page and right click on the hyper link, then select “copy shortcut”. You must do this and not copy from the address bar because we need to authenticate through Off Campus Connect (EZproxy). To authenticate correctly, you must use that URL.
- Government Documents: Copy call number directly from OPAC in order to place the periods and other punctuation in the correct place
