Electronic Databases

African American Music Reference

Contains biographies, chronologies, sheet music, images, lyrics and other reference materials about the diverse history and culture of the African American experience through music. Information can be located by using a Quick Search or Advanced Search or by browsing lists of works, people, etc.


Classical Music Library

Provides access to audio selections of classical music recordings and supplementary reference information. Classical recordings can be located by browsing alphabetical lists of composers, artists, genres, and more or by browsing lists of categories, such as orchestral works.


DRAM

This database gives streaming access to American music recordings by New World Records from a current collection of diverse works including folk, opera, jazz, 19th century classical, early rock, musical theater and much more.


JSTOR

This database gives access to full text articles from many scholarly journals in the area of music. It can be searched by using keywords in a Basic Search screen or by using other options (e.g. article title) in the Advanced Search screen. It can also be searched by selecting the Browse option and viewing subject or title lists of journals and their contents.


Music Index

Contains references to articles from 1978 to the present on music and musicians in 725 international music periodicals covering all styles and genres of music. Music Index also has book reviews, obituaries, new periodicals, and news and articles about music, musicians, and the music industry and can be searched by using keywords in the Basic Search screen or by using other options in the Expert Search screen.


Music Online

This database enables the user to search in multiple databases including the African-American Music Reference, Classical Music Library, Classical Music Reference Library, Classical Scores Library, and Dance in Video.


Oxford Music Online

This authoritative full text online resource covers all aspects of music and is comprised of The Oxford Dictionary of Music, Grove Music Online, and The Oxford Companion to Music. This is an excellent starting point for all music research.


RILM Abstracts of Music Literature

RILM offers a broad international coverage base and it provides references, with summararies, to articles, books, dissertations and other publicatons of scholarly interest on various music topices. Indexing begins in 1967.

Selected Web Sites

American Musicological Association

This is the Web site of the American Musicological Society, which was founded in 1934. It provides references to various publications in the area of musicology, including doctoral dissertations. Additionally, it gives information about funding and grants, and other types of information.


Ethnomusicology, Folk Music, and World Music

Provides detailed information about music from around the world and is maintained by the University of Washington. It gives access to online publications, recordings and videos and even research centers and organizations.


Internet Resources for Music Scholars

This is the Web site for the Loeb Music Library at Harvard University. It provides access to research guides and other valuable information for scholars who are researching various music topics.


Judaica Sound Archives

This is the Web site of the FAU Libraries Judaica Sound Archives, whose main mission is to collect, preserve and digitize Judaica sound recordings and to provide Internet access to these recordings to students, scholars and the general public.
