In the News: Women in STEM
Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies presented its 2013 Women’s Leadership Forum on March 15. This year’s event focused on Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and featured a keynote address by former NASA astronaut, Jan Davis, Ph.D. Women’s History Month at FAU concludes this week with a meditation workshop, a discussion on women and leadership, Pampered OWLS, and a symposium on “Boundaries, Bodies and Dissidence: Negotiating New Spaces of Feminist Knowledge.” For more information visit the Women’s History Month events page and a recent article published in the UP, FAU’s student magazine. In the News: For a second year in a row, “In the News” is celebrating Mother’s Day early. The focus this time around is on “working” mothers. Political analyst and Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen recently commented that Ann Romney, wife of Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney, had “never worked a day in her life” and because the Romneys were financially secure, they did not have to “deal with the kinds of economic issues that a majority of the women in this country are facing” today. Mrs. Romney defended her choice to stay at home and raise her five sons, which, she said, was hard work.

In the News: Former women business executives are setting their sights on the government. Carly Fiorina, past CEO of Hewlett Packard, and Meg Whitman, former eBay chief executive, won their respective California Republican primary elections last Tuesday: Ms. Fiorina for U.S. Senate and Ms. Whitman for governor. Both candidates spent millions of dollars on their campaigns and will most likely attempt to outspend their rivals in the upcoming general elections.
