World Oceans Day – June 8

The ocean: the body of water that links us all, from the oxygen we breathe to the pharmacopoeia that it yields.   In observance of World Oceans Day this month FAU Digital Library highlights Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute (HBOI) for its development of research at FAU and its significant contributions to FAU’s institutional repository.

The HBOI digital collection showcases the research of the institute’s scientists and field experts working to advance ocean-related innovation, exploration, research, education and conservation. From developing ways to preserve coral reef systems and to analyzing organisms in search of compounds with disease-fighting potential, HBOI has, for more than 40 years, contributed to our understanding of  Ocean Science. Stay informed about HBOI research by subscribing to their e-bulletin.

EBSCO brings back the browsing experience

The  enhanced features of the new EBSCOhost viewer bring a real browsing experience to the online journal.  I was  impressed by the clean navigation — seamlessly jumping  from one issue to the next, and skimming a hyperlinked table of contents while the selected article remains in view. FAU’s subscription EBSCO databases include CINAHL, Academic Search Premier, and Business Source Premier (see  EBSCOhost for a complete list of databases). View a short demonstration here.

JSTOR – September Database of the Month

Update (09/07/10): JSTOR has undergone  a major platform change and has a new look, see JSTOR Platform Highlights for more information. Also, if you are looking for a list of FAU Libraries’ subscription databases, go directly to Indexes/Databases.

Start your research with JSTOR

JSTOR offers a high-quality, interdisciplinary digital archive to support scholarship and teaching. FAU has JSTOR access to almost one thousand leading academic journals across the humanities, social sciences, and sciences, and other materials valuable for academic work. The entire database is full-text searchable, offers search term highlighting, includes high-quality images (including search results from ArtStor), and is interlinked by millions of citations and references.

Journals are always included from volume 1, issue 1 and include previous and related titles, but the most recently published issues (past 3-5 years) are not generally available. However, several publishers provide links to the recent content on their own website, and you can include these article citations in your JSTOR search by checking the “Search for links to articles outside of JSTOR.” If FAU has access to these articles, you can click the “Find it at FAU” button to access the full text.
