In the News: California’s ban on the sale of foie gras, a French delicacy that’s popular in many fine dining establishments, goes into effect July 1, 2012, much to the dismay of many of the state’s best known chefs.

News Item: Food lovers across the country were shocked with the announcement that Gourmet, the 69-year-old “magazine of good living,” will cease publication after its November issue. Publisher Condé Nast cited the current state of the economy and losses in ad pages as major reasons for shutting down Gourmet‘s presses. Although not necessarily a substitute for the magazine, here are a few titles related to foodways, cooking, and cuisine that Gourmet readers can “devour” after their subscriptions expire.

News Item: For many college students, coffee is the quintessential morning beverage of choice (or the mail afternoon and evening drink, if it’s finals week) . It’s easy to brew, easy to buy (thanks to the many java establishments on campus), and recent studies have shown that coffee may even help lower the risk of stroke.
